The new 170 must have looked almost futuristic (compared to its predecessor, the 1931 model) when it was announced.
The 170 H was rear-engined (H stands for Heck = Rear) and was in many respects not unlike the VW Beetle. It did not sell in large numbers and was cancelled in 1939.
The 500 was about as handsome as they come. The 500K was even more magnificent. The 3.8 litre straight eight engine was enlarged to 5019cc and was fitted with a supercharger. It offered no less than 160 bhp and was incredibly smooth to drive. But when you floored the accellerator, according to 'Autocar', it became a wild beast: .." As the blower engages, an almost demoniacal howl comes in, the rev counter and the speedometer needles leap round their dials..".
